Acrylic Nail Powders FAQs

Acrylic powder is used during the application of acrylic nails. These powder formulas come in various colours and are combined with acrylic liquids or dipping pots to form a hard coat over the nails.

Before applying your acrylic powder, we suggest removing any existing polish, buffing the nail bed surface and removing any cuticle skin for a clean surface ready for a fresh set of nails.

If you’re wondering whether to go for a nail powder dip or an acrylic powder application, the main difference between the two is the time it takes to administer them. Generally speaking, a powder dip application will take less time than acrylic powder, although both will give you a stunning, polished finish. It really comes down to a matter of preference and how long you’d like to spend applying your new set of nails.

Aim for a bead that holds its shape but still flows when you pat it, roughly two parts liquid to one part powder by feel rather than measurement. Too wet and the bead runs into the cuticle and stays soft; too dry and it drags, leaves ridges and lifts at the edges.

Clear is used over tips and for encapsulating art. Pink is the natural-looking base used across the nail bed. White is for the free edge in a French. All three are the same chemistry, so they work together in one set, and each starts at $7.50 for 10g.

Usually the bead was too wet, or the brush was pressed and pushed rather than patted. Air gets dragged in when you work product that has already started to set. Pick up a properly balanced bead, place it, and let it self-level before you shape.

Nearly always prep rather than product. Oil or moisture left on the nail plate stops the acrylic bonding, and product taken onto the cuticle or sidewall gives it an edge to lift from. Dehydrate and prime properly, and leave a hairline margin around the skin.

Most professional monomers will work with most powders, but keeping the liquid and powder from one system gives you predictable set times. Our acrylic liquids include HEMA free monomers for sensitive clients, such as our Low Odour HEMA-Free liquid, which also comes in watermelon and coffee scented versions.

Powder is stable and keeps for years if it is sealed and kept dry, so buying a larger size is usually good value. Keep the lid on between clients: powder that has sat open picks up dust and moisture from the air, which affects how the bead behaves.

Yes, that is sculpting. You fit a form under the free edge and build the extension directly onto it with product, then remove the form once it has set. It takes more practice than tips but gives a stronger, better-fitting extension with no join to blend.
