If you use an e-file, yes. Filing acrylic and gel throws fine dust that hangs in the air long after the client leaves, and it is the part of the job most likely to cause you problems over a career. Beyond your chosen system, the working essentials are a lamp, a file and buffer set, lint-free wipes, brush mats, a dust collector once you are using an e-file, and cuticle oil to finish every service. Add an arm rest and a desk mat when you are working on clients regularly.

A desk mat. They catch dust, acetone and spilled monomer, wipe clean between clients and stop the surface marking. Disposable large desk mats work out cheapest for a busy salon; a silicone mat suits a home setup.

Files are consumables. A file used on one client should be either discarded or sanitised depending on its grit and construction, and any file that has lost its cut should be replaced rather than pushed through another set. Buffers dull faster than they look like they have.
