Why a good nail art brush is a nail professional’s best friend

Investing in high-quality nail art tools and brushes is a great way to elevate your craft and give you perfect results every time. The range of individual and nail brush sets from NSI Nails Australia are made from durable materials, so you can use and clean them over and over without losing bristles or performance over time.

Create intricate designs with ease using our ultra-fine nail art brushes, or opt for a set to give you total control, whether you’re creating detailed geometric and abstract line work, ombre finishes or a watercolour effect. For amateur at-home nail artists, you’ll find that the quality of your manicures is immediately improved with nail brushes that can help you get flawless coverage and create shapes and designs with ease.

Nail art brushes you need in your toolkit

When it comes to creating stunning nail designs, the right nail art brush can seriously level up your game. Whether you’re sketching dainty details or blending dreamy gradients, these nail art brushes deserve a spot in your kit:

  • Striping brush

Perfect for clean, crisp lines, the striping brush is your go-to for geometric patterns, colour blocking, marbling effects and more. Its fine tip lets you paint tiny details and fill in small areas with total precision.

  • Detailing brush

Think of the detailing brush as the striping brush’s even tinier sister. With an ultra-fine tip, it’s perfect for delicate nail art like filigree, lettering and intricate detailing. Bonus: it plays nicely with both gel polishes and acrylic paints.

  • Flat brush

A flat brush is fab for creating one-stroke designs, blending colours and shading like a pro. Its straight-across bristles give you smooth, even coverage, perfect for painting bases or building dreamy gradients. You can even customise it by trimming the sides to create angled effects like blooming florals.

  • Fan brush

The fan or ombre brush is your magic wand for all things extra. Use it to sprinkle glitter, apply flakies, blend gradients or gently brush away excess powder. Wet it slightly with acrylic paint to create swoon-worthy swirl effects and artistic textures.

  • Dotting brush

Making cute little dots shouldn’t be a struggle and with a dotting brush, it’s a total breeze. This beauty has a rounded tip that lets you place the perfect pop of nail polish right where you want it. Whether you're going for polka dots, dainty flower centres or bubbly nail art details, this brush is your go-to for smooth, even shapes every time.

Get the best application of acrylic nails with a nail brush set

Our range of Kolinsky acrylic brushes come with a larger belly, which helps to retain acrylic monomer liquid, extending the time you have to shape and create each nail. Made from natural hair, with proper care and maintenance, your Kolinsky acrylic nail brushes will give you excellent, smooth results again and again. Choose from crimped and round brushes according to your preference and take your acrylic nail game to the next level.

Caring for your Kolinsky brushes

Kolinsky brushes deserve a little extra love to keep performing at their best. Made with natural hairs, they’re delicate by nature, so proper care is key.

Before your first use, you'll want to clean off the light protective dressing applied during manufacturing. To do this, dip just the bristles into NSI Attraction or Universal Nail Liquid for about 15 seconds. Gently lift the brush out and wipe it on a clean nail wipe. Repeat a couple of times until the bristles are clean and ready to use.

Never wash your Kolinsky brush with soap, water or acetone. Those harsh formulas can dry out the natural hairs and damage your brush over time.

The best nail brushes for nail art depend on the look you’re going for. A striping brush is perfect for long, clean lines and geometric designs, while a detailing brush helps you create fine lines, delicate swirls and tiny decorative elements. For bolder strokes, gradients or one-stroke florals, a flat brush is your go-to. Want to sprinkle glitter or blend like a pro? Reach for a fan brush!

If you're just starting out, we recommend building your kit with a few different brush types so you can experiment with curves, stripes, textures and effects.

A good starter set covers the three jobs most designs need: a fine liner or striping brush for lines and detail, a flat or angled brush for colour fills and one-stroke work, and a fan brush for gradients and glitter fades. Dotting tools are worth having too, for dots, florals and placing stones. Our Brushes & Tools Nail Art Set includes 14 brushes and 6 dotting tools in one pouch, which covers all of these.

Clean acrylic brushes with monomer only, wiping through a lint-free towel until nothing more comes out, then reshape the head. Never put a kolinsky brush in acetone: it strips the natural oils from the hair and leaves the brush splayed. Clean gel brushes with a gel brush cleanser rather than acetone, which dries out the bristles and can loosen the glue in the ferrule.

Product has cured in the base of the bristles. On a gel brush that means it was left where light could reach it, so store brushes capped or in a drawer. On an acrylic brush it means monomer was left to dry in the ferrule. A brush cleaner and conditioner can rescue a mildly stiff brush, but a fully cured one is finished.

Flat or bristles-up, with the cap on, and out of direct light. Never stand a brush on its head in a pot, because it bends the hairs permanently. A brush mat or roll keeps a set in shape and stops them rolling into each other on the desk.

A long, thin liner is what gives you a continuous line, because it holds more product and needs reloading less often. For very fine work a size 00 or smaller suits detail; for longer sweeping lines a slightly longer bristle is easier to control than a shorter one.
